Photoshop - a new way of showing art

' Globalization is being shared by technological change' said Jan  Nederveen Pieterse. ( 2004,p. 8) The result and a good representation is the use of Photoshop. 'A brand name for computer software used to digitally alter digital photographs or other  graphics'. (Dictionary,2013)  The definition of Photoshop shows the main purpose of creating this program- to alter an image. If the user has plenty skill, the image can be whatever they want.

Photoshop can be thought as a new kind of art style. However, this kind of art style is under querying. Some people argue photoshop misleading them in different ways. To me, Photoshop is changing the way I'm viewing art.

I learnt photoshop last semester and I found it wealth learning because I can make an image much more beautiful than before and it's amazing in some ways.  This is the image that I make last semester. A man changes his face with a fish. I made this image to encourage people pay more attention of the animals, think about what they feel. And I believe this image may change some people's mind and love the animals. That is how Photoshop is changing my view of art. By using it, I find it can be used in many ways and can be used to show different things that real images can't. I don't believe some one can take a real image like this one.

The disadvantage of Photoshop is obvious. People can use it to alter an image to whatever they want.  The most critical is to use it in a right way.

  1. Yo Linrong, why does the font color keep changing between black and lighter black? You are making me car sick.

You compare Photoshop to art and you continue on to saying that you can not take a photo like the one you photoshopped. I could draw the picture you photoshopped. Someone could probably even paint it more realistically than you shopped it.

I'm actually going to argue that Photoshop isn't art. It is going to be devastating because I have put no thought into it. Saying Photoshop is art is akin to saying that a paintbrush is art. It's a tool. Imagine if I said my hand was art because it drew awesome pictures and wrote emotional poetry, I'd be a fool.

I am not saying that Photoshop can't create art, I know it can. It isn't an art style or form though.

Also your image was really thought provoking. If there were fish swimming around the ocean with human heads and fishermen just caught them in nets and you could buy them from the Fish and Chip shop, I would eat them. Probably due to the culture surrounding me. Though if the human-faced fish was smiling and wearing sunglasses and a hat, I would assume that there would be some higher intelligence behind the creature. So I would put it in a fish tank and feed it. I wouldn't eat a human with a fish head, that just seems weird.

  2. Hi Linrong,
Your use of images for this blog got me interested and I agree that your picture of the fish man is thought provoking and clever. An interesting take on modern art- I have not given much thought to photo shopping as an art which indeed is affecting our lives and distorting realities. Perhaps you could have further expanded upon the negative consequences of this including self esteem issues, ideas and ideals around beauty and body image and the affects photo shopping has in the advertising world. An interesting read and a good topic to think about.
    Thanks
    Lauren

  3. Hi Linrong,

The images you used for this post were very relevant and aided your argument well. Photoshop has indeed changed global culture in it's ability to create 'fake' perfection. The standard of beauty has changed now that images can be edited so flawlessly and to such a great extent. I wouldn't call Photoshop an art form, in fact I'd probably say the opposite- I don't like all the edits that Photoshop can do- eg thinning a womans body- as it represents an unattainable goal for all women. However it is a brilliant example of a new media form being used to change global culture.
